Journal No.2 – First Startup Business Announced: Home Flipping

House to flip

I’ve always loved reading about real estate.  For ten years I’ve read every book and took every course on the subject.  I’ve consumed the Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad series which focused on business and real estate.  In fact, I liked real estate so much that I got a Real Estate Broker’s License in Idaho and California.  However, this has caused a few problems. Have you ever heard this saying:  You are what you gaze at?  Well, for entertainment during my last Afghanistan deployment, I got into online business podcasts (see Journal No.1); and because of it, I now want…continue

Journal No.1 – Rebranding as a Test Pilot

I’m re-branding Free-Market Startup and re-launching it with a new and improved purpose.  One of the most important changes is this:  I’ll be starting a couple of businesses and test fly them for you.  You’ll see them develop from the very start. I admit it.  I got distracted with “shiny objects.”  I lost focus on what a business is for and got hung up on the marketing channels and tools.  If you’ve read my first or second article, you know I got the idea for Free-Market Startup from deployments to Afghanistan. Briefly, this country was the cross-roads of commerce for centuries, as goods…continue

We Busted 3 Common Myths About Starting Businesses!

College steps

Sometimes there isn’t anything common about common sense, especially when it comes to common advice about business startups.  Have you ever heard this one?   “Everybody knows that nine out of 10 business fail within their first two years.” It sounds true, but is it?  I mean it’s pretty shocking if it is.  In the newspaper business they go by an odd colloquialism, “if it bleeds it leads.” That’s what sells newspapers I guess. Gossip relies on this same principle to spread bad news. Common knowledge can be based on facts for sure.  But, common knowledge is often wrong because we…continue

Emergency Landing, Fuel Leak, and Fire Trucks at SLC (and a Business Lesson, Too)

United Airline Plane

I had an eventful trip flying back from the Podcast Movement 2014 conference, yesterday (18 Aug 2014). My Sunday flight leg from Dallas to Boise was canceled while trying to make my connecting flight in Denver; and the next flight wasn’t until Monday.  “Dang, not again!” I thought. I was stranded in Chicago just two weeks earlier under very similar circumstances.   Except US Air Gave the “Ensign Solute” However, this time I was flying with United Airlines.  United was good enough to put me up in the Hilton Double Tree Hotel with $14 food voucher. Last time US Air just gave…continue

Deployed to Afghanistan: An Epiphany About What America Used to Be and Needs to Be

Editors note:  During the author’s 2008 and 2013 military deployments to Afghanistan, he observed free markets in their primitive state.  He saw what America had been and what Afghanistan is today. In this third-world country, the free market existed naturally.  It wasn’t a government program or stimulus plan.  Through war and political unrest, foreign invasions, tyranny, and the Taliban, the only constant for Afghans was commerce and free trade. No other institution was able to sustain and support the peoples of Afghanistan, which for centuries had been the crossroads of commerce and empires. THANKSGIVING, NOVEMBER 28, 2013 – KABUL, AFGHANISTAN By Nicholas McDonald…continue
